How to Shift Your Perspective on a Rainy Day

It is Friday morning and in Zürich, it is pouring with rain. As I sit in my humble abode, staring outside into the grey I feel inspired to share some thoughts on perspective.

As someone who lives on the European continent, I can appreciate that we are all eagerly waiting for warmer days to come. Finally, the cold season has come to an end, after what felt like an eternity of cold and grey days. Spring has sprung and all the colours to be seen around the city are nourishment to the soul. And yet, today it is cold, wet, and grey out there.

As a South African, more days than not, I see rain as a blessing. Coming from a country where water, especially quality water, is scarce you learn to appreciate it when mother nature washes away the old and nurtures the ground sparking new growth.

The truth is, I did not always see it this way. The rain used to be the preamble and cause of invisible yet very present potholes, hours of traffic and yes, a dampened mood.

It was only when I shifted my perspective, I noticed that I was in control of how my day was going to go. On days like these, I generally have three choices.

Choice #1: I could be as grey and cold as the weather outside. I can be miserable, stay inside and blame the weather for messing with my plans. Of course, I could have planned and checked out the weather report in advance. But hey, a girl can go with the flow every now and again.

Choice #2: I could put on my raingear and amidst slight discomfort carry on with my day. I could accept the weather as something I cannot control. I could find alternative options to the activities I had planned outdoors and still have a very productive day although it did not go as initially planned.

Choice #3: I could dance in the rain, literally or figuratively. I could celebrate the rain for all the good that it is. I can choose to imagine it washing away everything that no longer serves me and as a provision of everything I need to flourish. Hey, I could even put on my rainboots, tap into my inner child, and jump around in the puddles.

The point of this blog is to encourage a shift in your perspective today. Almost always it is in your power to find opportunities in every situation. You always have a choice.
