How to Manage Your Fear of Failure

Let’s face it, at some point or another, we have all been hesitant to chase our dreams. Often the fear of failure is what makes achieving your dreams seem impossible.

Now, the question is: What can you do to manage the fear?

  1. Plan. Take time to envision your dream. Know where you want to go and then plan the steps you need to take to get there, like with a physical destination. Figure out what resources you need, who can support you along the way and what obstacles could come in your way. You can then come up with a plan to overcome these obstacles so that you can chase your goals and realize your dreams.

  2. Set Goals. Make sure that you set goals that stretch your comfort zone but are attainable. Setting goals that are too much of a stretch can be overwhelming, daunting and demotivating. Rather celebrate the small steps than become hesitant to take the leap.

  3. Grow. Accept that failure, similar to growing pains, is part of the growth process. None of us has it all figured out, but most of us can say that the moments of failure have resulted in getting to know ourselves better and bouncing back even stronger. How else can you identify your growth areas if you don't do anything that tests and uncovers these?

  4. Be curious. Approach every situation from a learning perspective. Get in touch with people who have done something similar and absorb as many tips as you can. Sharing stories about failure and then flourishing can be very insightful and motivating.

  5. Build your self-esteem and your confidence. Believe in yourself, your potential, and your worth. Celebrate your small wins. Create positive affirmations. If your internal world is healthy, strong and positive, chances are most things in the world around you will not shake you.

You owe it to yourself to chase your dreams and exceed your expectations. Failures are not a dead end but rather will send you in the direction you are meant to go. Choose to reframe your failure, it does not have to be something to fear and does not have to be only negative. It is an opportunity to learn and grow.
