Take a Break To Invest in Yourself

I have just returned from a three-week holiday in South Africa and would like to share some thoughts on the importance of taking a break.

Many of us almost feel guilty to take time off from work and our day-to-day lives. Yes, we all strive to create a life that doesn’t need “time off” and yes, we should all incorporate aspects of rest and self-care in every day. But when last did you take a few weeks to be completely present for you? Be honest with yourself. How often do you check in on your e-mails during your holiday? How often do you check your social media? How often do you chat to your work colleagues on your WhatsApp regarding “urgent matters” that in actual fact almost always can be solved without you? Ultimately, you cannot be present and focus on taking a break if your mind is everywhere except the current moment.

The truth is, taking a break starts with you. You need to take responsibility and draw your boundaries. You need to choose what your priorities are. You need to decide where and what to invest in. I encourage you to choose to set yourself and your rest as your priority. Invest time, thoughts, resources and energy in yourself.

This could mean:

  • Leaving your comfort zone and going on new adventures

  • Allowing yourself to do things that make your soul happy

  • Learning new things and growing

  • Re-connecting with yourself and what you need

  • Re-charging in whatever way works best for you

  • Spending time outdoors, being in nature can be extremely humbling

So why is it important to make your break and rest a priority? Chances are you will return more resilient, less stressed, more focused, refreshed and with a new state of mind. Productivity will be enhanced. You are filled with positive energy which can affect your relationships personally and professionally. Taking a step away can also provide you with clarity on what actually serves you and what does not.

I challenge you to see your next break as an investment in you.
